Because we like good sound with our videos XBMC was installed on the audio server. See Audio System for everything concerning the audio part of the setup.

XBMC is not available in the standard ubuntu 10.10 repositories. But no worries there's a PPA available for easy installation. Just follow these instructions.

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc xbmc-standalone
sudo apt-get update

Start XBMC at boot[edit]

Just login to the desktop you installed (KDE, gnome, ...) and look for a setting like "Automatic Login". Enable this and then logout. In the login menu that appears select XBMC and login again. XBMC will start in full-screen mode. From the next on everytime you boot you're machine You'll end up with XBMC running.

XBMC remote[edit]

There are applications for several phone OS'es available that can act as a remote for XBMC. To use them just use "audio" as host/ip name and 8080 as port. Username and password are not required.

  • Official XBMC remote is the best one for Android in my opinion.
